Definitely a hit at Forest. The less said about him now the better.

Agreed GreenMan. He was a class act.

Hit & Tit.

On his day at Forest he was good but never consistently brilliant and it was all in league one.

Barely a hit for me, just.

Had a couple of good seasons before he took the coin and stabbed us in the back. Then went on to have a couple of good seasons with the sheep before he stabbed them in the back. Haven't a clue if he was any good up in Scotland. Don't care. Judas bastard.

Gary Charles. For me he was a definite hit.

Not sure why Gary wasn't rated by some?

Good one Sniffer as he did divide opinion even though he won 2 England caps playing for us. I think he was the victim of being ahead of his time as an attacking full back. But this was back in the day when we judged our defenders by how many rows into the stand they could kick the opposing winger and Gary was keeping Brian Laws out of the team. It is surprising people rate Laws as one of our best ever right backs when Charles and a few others clearly had more ability.
Tarnished his reputation by going to the sheep maybe then his well publicised alcohol problem which I think and hope he is finally over.

Good discription SM. Gary is well now. I went to visit him in his restaurant in Matlock not too long ago and he's a smashing bloke.

Roy keane owes him big time but that's a story for another day!

It's cruel by my most vivid memory of him was when he scored an og for the sheep against us at the BB ground. I was sitting in the exec stand with a few thousand others watching a beam back. Cant really remember much of the game to be honest, just recall cheering when his sorrowful face appeared on the big screen after he scored.

I know he's dealt with a lot of demons. That moment must have tested him.

RE: A Hit Or A Flop - Camms - 14-05-2020

Charles was a hit in my opinion. Possibly even the first modern right back in the country at the time.

RE: A Hit Or A Flop - Alf Garnett - 14-05-2020

Charles - Hit. He was a class act.

I think he was actually over rated based on his obvious potential and glimpses of brilliance.
He never truly fulfilled his potential as we know.
Remember his debut in League Cup v Cov. Played on right wing and kept getting in behind Downes (who didnt?).
Pace can hide a multitude of deficiencies and I always felt he never really improved defensively especially in the air, where he was weak. For all his pace I felt he rarely dominated his side of the pitch.

Heres the caveat: He was playing on the opposite flank to the first full back I have ever seen that could dictate a game. Any comparison is unfair. Also Laws was a perfect foil for Psycho. Strong defensively, but also a really good footballer, super reliable and consistent. All in all Charles was rarely an upgrade for me.

Shows how spoilt for choice we were though I suppose. Overall a hit.
