So what can we read into that?

I would say tennis courts, swimming pool, basketball, a gym, cinema, restaurants, museum, hotel, etc etc.

That is a big shift from soulless bowl to sports village.

Lets try to keep this thread on EM though and use the Infrastructure thread for stadium talk.

If it becomes a top rated sports complex with all singing and dancing commercial outlets with the ground as the centrer piece as you say Sniffer then I am on-board.

Finishing 4th in the EPL shouldn’t be deemed a success.

That's a knockout competition so it's a bit different as it's affected by the draw but yes those are outliers. There's nuance with regards to priorities etc too.

Picking out exceptions doesn't make the general rule not true.

Yeah but underlying mindset is important.

Brighton and Brentford have achieved success, by their definition, without being driven by turnover.

There’s a deeper point here and EMs mindset, reflected in his approach to date.

RE: Evangelos Marinakis And Co - Paplane - 14-05-2024

This 'souless bowl' fan criticism of new stadiums is a bit of a red herring imo. Those bowls are the likes of Leicester, Reading, and the Sheep's stadiums. Those were all noughties stadiums built to the lowest possible budget to replace stadiums that were completely unfit for purpose at the turn of the century. They have zero design merit and a classic example of practicality and cost being given priority over function. Fan atmosphere, quality of architecture, etc were never part of the design brief and since they were built Stadium design has moved on significantly. After all, a quarter of a century has now passed since they were conceived.

Pap no doubt we will have an iconic design if our chairman is involved!

But both have in recent times moved to new stadiums

RE: Evangelos Marinakis And Co - Salvatore Matrecano - 14-05-2024

Totally different examples. Brighton played at the Withdean which had a capacity of only a few thousand and Griffin Park which could seat 12k.
Filbert street, BBG, Highfield Road, Goodison etc all in really run down parts of the city and none could be renovated. All very different circumstances.

Could be very wrong, but I think Brighton are going the way of Southampton. Treating everything completely as an exercise in business rather than sport. Sold too many of their best players. Manager going to leave. I don't think it'll prove sustainable.

They're also never going to win anything. Boring.

Agree. If you get the balance wrong in selling players, and they've sold a lot of talent recently, then that strategy can easily backfire. And they are boring. I'll never watch a match they play in, except against us, as i find them and their style completely dull and almost pretentious. Id love to see them have a poor season tbh so they realise that maybe they're not as high amd mighty as they think.

We’ll see but you can only really form an opinion on what has been, not what is yet to come.
