So thats 9 out of 20 with 3 maybes. Puts into perspective the scale of the task and cost involved.
Its meant to be a positive though because actually we dont have that much dead wood so there is a huge opportunity to improve the squad.
In my opinion anyone coming in must be better than what we currently have or have the potential to be better. No more signings as “back up” or strange here today gone tomorrow signings.
We've got to have a big squad though you've acknowledged that. Can't just go in with 11 excellent players. We got lucky this year with Colback stepping in so spectacularly well at LWB after Lowe got injured. Surely need to go into the season with depth, be it academy players or otherwise.
As you also pointed out we've got a lot of gaps so you can't be spending 10m per spot. Got to look for value both within the squad or otherwise. It depends what you mean by backup though? For example I'd be looking to sign Lowe and Zinc with a view to signing better players than them to start. Just because they know the squad/system and should be easy to sign.
If you just mean signing Arter style players looking for a final contract then yes it does seem we're passed that approach hopefully.
Although might I add it worked pretty well with Colback in the end...

Retaining all loan players I imagine this is what Forest will be looking at.
8 new players for a 25 man squad
plus the 5 loans acquired = 13 in
4 loaned out
9 sold or released (loaned out at worst)
The following contracts expire in 2023 though.
Smith
Colback
Cafu
Lolley
and the club may decide to recoup some funds and clear the wage bill.
Also expiring in 2023 is Samba and Johnson.
I'm confident their new deals are on the table already.

I think that's a fair assessment Sal. One question though, where does Grabban fit in to your thoughts?

Grabban is out of contract and doesn’t fit into my thoughts at all. We will have a 25 man squad, there isnt a place for an injury prone 34 year old who has failed in the PL in his prime. Sorry to be harsh.
Agree with McDs post above, its about right although I wouldn’t be fussed about Lowe returning. I forgot about Taylor too, there is a bit of dead wood that needs offloading.
Edit I have been critical of Taylor but it was fantastic to see him on the pitch at Wembley genuinely happy for his team mates although deep down he probably knows he won’t be part of it next year. Same goes for Bong who departs with my good wishes.

They won as a team, they celebrate as a team. Regardless of how much they featured, they are all included. It's that mentality we need to protect in the Premier league regardless of who comes in in terms of player - that mentality, as much as ability, will be crucial if we are to be successful

Completely disagree.
If you look back to the Frank Clark years it was the individual, the outcast, who was the difference.
Collymore left and the team was ultimately found out.
Having gained promotion under Bassett, it was the loss of quality with Campbell and, for the most part, Van Hooijdonk that saw us doomed to relegation.

I think your right, team sprit alone will only take us so far. For us to succeed we will need to invest heavily in quality players, hopefully the ones who come in will have the right attitude and be able to integrate with the core players. Hopefully Coopers experience before he took over will help, he will know the characters of most of the players we are looking at.
Not forgetting it’s the club as a whole, not just the players, that generates the good feeling. Don’t forget at Boro DJ was seen as somewhat disruptive, so much so they don’t want him to return, but he still gave 100% commitment to us.

Don't think you are being Harsh SM. Grabban has been a great signing and if he moves on he will be very fondly remembered.
The brutal truth is though that some tough decisions need to be made and there can be no room for sentiment.

True I suppose of the offer of one last big pay day could be too tempting to turn down.
