RE: 2017/2018 Accounts - Strawberry Avenger - 01-03-2019

If we can get CHs of the quality of Big Ben, Milo and Wraggy for 'free' then...

...and a 'new DCM' like Yates (for 'free') and Pele (for 'free') then I have optimism about the Summer transfer market.

January? This is just the beginning.

The Trent waters are flowing...

Milo and Ben a looney have been brilliant. Made me realise just how bad our centre halves have been over the last few years. Hard, strong and actually vocal. Milo especially looks pretty cultured too- he can pass and I bet he scores a few too.

RE: 2017/2018 Accounts - Strawberry Avenger - 02-03-2019

Could do with Pele being brilliant too.

Still an enigma.

Will we roll the dice on Pele and Appiah at some point?

Today? Forest were barren of creativity bar Lolley.

That just won't do. It's not enough.

Their argument being the inequality die to parachute payments. This would in theory protect clubs in loading debt and ensure creditors are paid. However Uefa / FIFA are not on the same sheet.
I’m confident the club knows what they are doing and have enough wiggle room to maintain sensible investment next year if as likely we don’t make it up. I don’t expect any £10m signings though.
Didn't the takeover produce a huge 2017 accounting profit (£32 million from memory) due to writing off of loans? Even though in reality it doesn't mean there is lots of cash to spend, would it protect us from ffp for a good while?

No, only a % of that counts as there are limits on personal investment (of which debt write offs count), however we're nowhere near danger at present.

Amortised we could still spend a shitload (technical term) this summer, although that is no guarantee that we will.

Just because you can max out the credit card doesn't mean you should, or would.

So we are protected fom Ffp then as things stand?

I obviously don't have access to the full accounts, but yes, we're quite safe at present & can spend, by our standards, relatively big still.

It's one I've been watching for & the new owners have grasped it so it's not only under control but I expect it to stay that way too.

The missing year, this year, should see an increased wage bill, so that will cost a little but because of amortisation the £25m summer spend doesn't get written down as £25m, of the bigger transfers Figueiredo is spread over 4 years, so about £500k a year, Carvalho over 5 years, so about £2.6m a year, Soudani over 3 years, about £1m a year & Grabban over 4 years, so about £1.5m a year.

That leaves last summers spending being recorded as about £5.6m, which is offset by Brereton's sale, meaning we're not far off break evens for transfers this year, with a slight increase in wages, possibly offset by increased ticket sales & commercial revenue.

Of course that means we carry next year's £5.6m instalment in to the summer, which comes off the summer spend, so we don't have bottomless pockets, but we still have spending power without troubling FFP.

Thank you for the explanation NG3. That makes things a bit easier for people like me that don't really have a clue about finances. Really interesting read mate!

Ty for that.  It makes things simple to understand re: our ffp position.

In short, we're being well run.

RE: 2017/2018 Accounts - stirred - 03-03-2019

I gather the profit / loss of the club is far from the full picture from FFP. Certain expenditure is exempt, along the lines of infrastructure - so I assume the new stadium work for example - and academy investment.

Also highlights the value of academy products for repairing the FFP picture - since they cost nothing, so have no asset value sitting on the balance sheet, any transfer fee is pure profit for that year. So the money men would probably be eyeing up Benny as a way to cover some amortisation / facilitate further spending next year, like Brereton’s sale has effectively paid for this years amortiziation (and more) of last summers spending.

Yes, the stadium work & the Academy are exempt from FFP

Yes, the academy is exempt from FFP when it comes to us spending, but at the same time produces a valid income stream to offset FFP.

It's why, financially, backing the Academy & it's products is such a no-brainer.

It's also why questions were asked, last autumn, about the treatment of certain young players, because if we don't have clear career paths for our young academy graduates they just become depreciating assets.

Legitimate questions considering the bursting through of Yates at this late stage when he may have proven more effective than Watson alongside Colback earlier in the season...

And Worrall going north of the border when Forest's CH back line composed of older aged, inexperienced at this level and 'make shift' was 'thinly' veiled as depth when prime time CHs were the order of the day...as the recent acquisition of Milo and Big Ben have shown.

To be fair, those were not the only positions that needed 'prime time' performers for the top 6.  Another battle ready winger wouldn't have gone amiss.  An ACM that can hold up the ball and put the choker on teams...and yes, some depth at LB.

RE: 2017/2018 Accounts - Strawberry Avenger - 03-03-2019

IN short, the Forest Academy is flying the flag with a well run and deserved reputation.

It's one area of the club to keep an eye on. (I remember when Eugen Bopp, Williams, Jenas, Reid, Bamford, Harewood (a late bloomer...)...the successive waves of talent were in the 'Academy' and was excited to see Hart, during one pre-season game, line up with his Academy babes for the 2nd half leaving first half performers like Tony Vaughan to watch I guess...and it was transformative.)

RE: 2017/2018 Accounts - Fumanchew - 04-03-2019

The amount teams are still getting in parachute payments is still a little mind blowing to me, this season alone the amounts were;

W.Brom 42 mil
Swansea 42 mil
Stoke 42 mil
Hull 34 mil
M’Boro 34 mil
A.Villa 17 mil
Norwich 17 mil

Norwich like Cardiff and Fulham have showed that the 3 year cycle can help you get promoted back up to the Prem, and to break into the playoffs takes a sustained period of years and on and off the field development.

RE: 2017/2018 Accounts - Paplane - 04-03-2019

Last year of parachute for the villa. They may have wealthy owners but as we know, that counts for diddly squat when the FFP man comes a knocking.

Gonna love watching them implode in the summer.
