Carvalho looks a bit lost playing on the left. I'd much prefer to see Ameobi there as he seems to have the ability to beat a man and put a cross in. In this team, I don't know where else he can play, or who else you can drop for him at the moment.

I won't be using the excuse that Carvalho missed some of pre-season for his average or less than average performances so far this season for much longer. After the international break there are no excuses. He needs to show more than the odd fancy flick to start to convince me.

Carvalho will end up like his old pals last year...only thing for him is the 13 million we paid for him...he is no better then the kid we hot from Everton two years ago...nd hd wouldn't have cast us more then 2 million..

The problem with Carvalho is the same one that Joe Lolley faced, and initially suffered from.
They both have had other duties placed on them; they are the first line of defence and have to put a shift in each game.
It took Joe a good few games to get into the swing of things, but he now looks as good as ever.
Missing pre-season would not have helped Carvalho's fitness levels, certainly not with his increased work load.
Class will prevail in the end and Carvalho has bags of it.

i had written some stuff but basically ended up in a similar place to you Kylos, comparing Silva and Carv, i think Carv did ok during his 65 minutes but Silva was involved in everything and for a guy smaller than everyone else he has a bit of a 'don't mess with me' type swagger which Carv doesn't have, Silva is an unsung hero for me, seems more suited to the more chaotic phases in games, also a great engine, at present 2 or 3 octaves off everyone elses creative anticipation scale at the moment but credit the guy he has no fear and an eye for the audacious. Basically happy to see them both starting, hope Carv shines soon

I'm forever comparing him to neves in terms of value for money. As painful as it is, I just cant see why we paid so much for him. I think silva has more about him than carvalho, fingers crossed he gets some confidence after the break and his season starts.

I always think with Carvalho, Benfica wouldn't have released him if they thought he was destined for greatness. They wouldn't release Semedo on a permanent for that reason.
After his injury, and him playing catchup as a result, I'm hoping he's just struggling to come to terms with what his new role is in the team. Getting injured was the worst possible scenario for him under the new manager, after the last one didn't particularly rate him.
He has undoubted quality - we've seen it, but I can't see him playing in that no10 role that AK played him in.
