They were all great players as were one or two others not on the list like Withe, Davenport and much as it pains me to say, PVH. Where Stan comes out on top for me is that he’s the only player that I’ve seen that would practically win games on his own. Just give him the ball on the halfway line and sit back and watch as he runs past 3 or 4 players and smashes it to the top corner from 25 yards with either foot! And he did it every week!

For me Clough just shades it plus he did it for Forest over a much longer period than Stan.
For me Stan had everything, there was nothing he couldn’t do.
Stan was awesome but I don't think he could pick a pass like Nigel could, then again Stan could turn and run with the ball better than Nigel.

Stan was an excellent passer of the ball, his back to goal and link up play were top draw.

That said, if Clough had signed Collymore during that relegation season, we'd have had them both playing in the same team. And that would have been something to behold.

Stan had all the physical attributes. His raw, naked talent is beyond doubt. I didn't think back to goal was the best use of him as they found out at L*verp**l. He wasn't 'Kenny.'

Ok. I'll do this.
3. Stan Collymore. Raw, naked talent beyond question. We had the best of him. He could make a goal out of nothing. We 'DID' get promoted with him & a high Division 1 finish.
2. Nigel Clough. Defies time and space. A footballing brain worthy of his father. Forest won league cups. With relative success in the league placings.
1. Gary Birtles/Tony Woodcock. The WILL to score goals. Forest enjoyed their 'golden years' success with these two miracle men. League Championship. League Cups. European Cups. Super Cup.
Forest were mesmerising with the the Miracle Men. Vintage Clough with the 'Master' in full flight.
Gary 'Bl**dy' Birtles was the only one missing from my Sticker album. I did get him a full year 'after the fact.'

You're nailed on re: the CH situation. Losing Walker and Sheringham were disastrous. The wrong time for them to go or for eg. Pearce to get injured. Even the reliable Chettle injured.
We're missing one striker from this equation. Sheringham. I recall Sheringham scoring the goal to sink L*verpool. How to do you go from doing that at the start of the season, then losing both him and Walker and then getting relegated. All in the same season?
Walker and Sheringham summed up Forest's decline. Can't defend. Can't score.
It did for them. And Clough.
