Was backed to the hilt and summer and tasked to build a squad good enough for promotion.
He stated at start of season that he had the squad he wanted.
He left us seriously short in key areas.
1) not adequate cover for Grabban
2) no cover at left back
3) didn’t sign a box to box midfielder
4) the wide players he signed - Dias/Goncalves just didn’t work.
5) didn’t sign a good enough keeper - he chased Pantilimon all summer and paid big wages for him and isn’t good enough to get you promoted

there is only so long fans will buy into this PR stuff being blasted out from the club. needs to happen on the pitch.
alot of the money spent last summer has been wasted and would be very lucky to recoup half of it now.

Mon is far from perfect but the mess had already been created and it looks like a bigger mess than we originally thought going by what we have seen recently.

Karanka did a brilliant job in getting rid of most of the rubbish; remember the cull after the Preston Home game?
The squad inherited by MON is a relatively new one - Pantillimon, Robinson, Colback, Lolley, Grabban, Murphy, Carvalho, Jakob, Watson, Hefele, Darikwa and Soudani have all been at the club for no more than two years.
Add the few players that MON signed and the ex Academy players and the squad is relatively new.
MON has strengthened the defence so I would say the players at his disposal are better than what Karanka had; the results he has managed to eke out with those players leaves at lot to be desired.
In defence of MON; he clearly has his own way of doing things and his own way of wanting the team to play, that would inevitably cause some disruption.
That should have been a minor blip; these players are, in the main, seasoned professionals who should be able to take changes to style and formation in their stride.
The current run of bad form has to lie with MON and his decision making; the form may change quite soon, but I doubt it will be soon enough for him to keep his job.

I’m sorry, but at the time there wasn’t much of a mess...........Yes we needed a couple of centre halves granted and the squad before the January window was slightly unbalanced. But nothing that a decent manager at this level could’ve sorted and built on and reinstalling confidence
But no O’Neill comes along, adds to the slightly unbalanced squad to make it a very unbalanced squad and undoes all the good work that had been done by completely unfootballing everything with creativity none existent.
So no I haven’t got a short memory, but thanks for being so patronising anyway.

Completely agree with you. The rhetoric being spouted by the NEP now is ridiculous, saying the squad is nowhere near good enough? It was doing alright up until somebody upset the apple cart after Ispwich; we were 5th and had only lost 2 league games all season!
It's bordering on propaganda, trying to manipulate the fans into believing MON walked into a disaster when actually the opposite is true, he walked into a very promising situation and soured it quick time.
Where are the articles on '5 Managers Who Could Replace Martin O'Neill' like the one they ran while Karanka was still in the job?

Propaganda by the post, Gary Birtles, Kenny Burns - when will it end. We are not stupid. IMHO - Karanka set his team up to play in a certain way, against mid to top table sides who attacked us we tended to do well, we were hard to beat and on many occasions more than matched the top sides. Where Karanka came unstuck was against sides that put all their players behind the ball. Since he left, the tactics have changed and the style of play that obviously doesn't suit the set of players at Martins disposal. They look lost and as if they have never played together before. We look very vulnerable in defence and very poor in attack. A good manager makes use of the skills available to him and develops these to make the best he can. Martin tells us that he knows his players better than anyone, but the proof of the pudding is in the results and they have not been good. We were not in a mess when Martin arrived, the defence had been disrupted through injury but Martin should have been more than capable of sorting that. He started to use players that we, as fans, had seen could not and should not be playing and dropped those who had shown time and time again that they were more than capable. Steve Bruce has had a positive impact immediately, for me Martins tactics and style of play have ensured that we had no chance of getting in the top six no matter how many time the Post and Radio Nottingham kept telling us how close we were. The players, imho, don't know what to do and have not bought into Martins methods.
