You make my point, what is the long term strategy in that?
Could have used this window to look at players for next season as well, perhaps from League one, get them involved and know the direction going (and could be good for either the championship or if we go down), means less recruitment in the summer. As it is, there is going to be another mass turnover of players.
I am also not sure they will be enough to save us from Relegation.
Next two games are absolutely massive
The long term strategy is not adding more players on long contracts while attempting to protect the team in the short term and allowing for a mini clear out in the summer. I thought this was what everyone wanted?!
Also not sure I've mentioned it but WE'RE IN A PANDEMIC, no-one has any money.
NO one has money, shame we dont and have owners willing to invest, as in a pandemic, good bargains to be had!

They are investing, to the tune of 35m operating losses minus whatever we make in transfer sales. Plus whatever extra losses we took on from no crowds, which based on our last accounts looks to be around 10m plus any TV rebates or anything like that.
Yeah most of that on Deadwood players on high wages, on managerial (and staff) sacking, taking on poor staff /players from Oly who have rarely contributed. They have had nearly 4 years to start doing better off the field financially yet they have failed to stop the losses, even though supposed to be experienced owners.
So that investment is a lot to their own making, spending money at the right time on the right players, making the right appointments, improving the scouting structure, couldve gone a long way to get it right. Yet they go from one bad manager to the next.
Even last January (before covid hit) prime example of the owners f*****g things up by not investing in the team, we were third and had beaten leeds, yet didn't buy from a position of strength, whereas WBA, Fulham and Leeds did.
They haven't got the recruitment right, meaning to help with FFP they have to regularly sell off Academy players. so i am not sure losing that much money is something to be shouting about, it should be embarrassing and questions should've being asked why?
Have they learnt from their mistakes, no is the answer to that!

I will say they do like to recruit a player (loan or perm) but its "a scattergun and throw enough mud they hope something will stick approach"
Can anyone seriously argue its been quantity over quality??
As i have said numerous times, we have received more in transfer fees than we have spent, its not even close after selling Cash!!

That's a pretty standard strategy allowing the club to run a wage budget that can compete near the top. It's the only viable strategy to challenge at the top without parachute payments. Otherwise your ceiling is Barnsley.
Most statistics will point to wages being the closest correlation to actual results so being able to compete in this is crucial.

It has been scattergun Widdow I must agree with you there but changes have been made.
There was no mention of Modesto this window, that's because there has been a change.
Gaz Brazil now works together with the manager on recruitment.
I would say that means that the scattergun approach is over.
What is done is done. No point keep going over old ground.
I think a lesson has been learnt but time will tell.

I agree, and on the last report of wages being paid in the championship we were mid table. No wonder we end up there like you say.

Uwantlee & ThePromisedLand nail a lot of good points as to why this window is OK in context of where we are, but disappointing in context as to where we are headed. There are lower league clubs having to sell their better players at knock down prices because of the pandemic. The pandemic is as much an opportunity as it is an obstacle.
But we're in no position to take advantage of that opportunity because of awful buys in previous windows, due to investing in a recruitment division that has been poor with it's spend, and clueless with it's strategy.
Now this an outlandish suggestion that will get some stick, but I genuinely think Marinakis owes us. Players we've spent millions on such as Soudani & Silva have moved to Oly for "undisclosed" fees, whilst we've taken their rejects in the likes of Dias, Guerrero, Cafu etc.
It's been a unfair exchange, and all Marinakis has done has sell off our academy produce to fund his mistakes at our club.
To make amends I'd like to see him sell some of the trash we've signed go to Oly, and give that money to Hughton to spend in the Summer. It's a far easier league to do well in, and players like Christie, Blackett, Artur etc. have half a chance of doing something over there like Derbyshite did.
Marinakis came here, we were a toss team fighting relegation. 62m worth of sales later - mostly from the academy - we're still a toss team fighting relegation. It's not fair that our academy and the roots left by Doughty & the likes have carried his mistakes so much. So it's about time for a bit of payback IMO.
I am of course totally aware that the last thing he would ever consider doing is anything like that.

It's also based on the assumption that the players would actually want the moves. They can't be *forced* to move.

Very true Sausage. Although you would think some would fancy playing in an easy, sunnier league where. I dare say at least a few like Bong and Jenks might fancy it.
Like I say, it's more dreamland stuff, but it'd raise my - currently fairly low - opinion of Marinakis if something like that was to occur.

Easier league maybe, but Olympicos smashed us in that pre season game and beat us 9 times out of 10 (thinking we may get one draw).
Not many of our players could get in their team.

Bouch did poorly here, but has donewell there. Matt Derbyshire was a mini-God there yet did awful here, etc.
For me it's about suitability rather than "good/bad" player.
For example, I think Carvalho would do brilliant there where he has more time on the ball, and isn't roughhoused as much.

Are you referring to the £34.4m?
That's not cash, it takes into account depreciation etc.
There was an increase of salary commitments of 8.6m on the prior year and other expenses of 3.7m.
That's simply mismanagement no matter how you dress it up.
