So in the cold light of day with O'Neil due to be announced today and possibly Roy Keane as his number 2 is this as good a scenario as we could have hoped for ? both know the league well, both know the club well and have experience getting teams out of the league.

We have a 19 game season now and if they can hit the ground running we have every chance of being in the mix at the end of it.

Its going to be interesting to see who they bring in over the next couple of weeks (and who goes) and also who recovers from injury ....

Still PL players though which is what we don't have any of I'm afraid so the argument 'polishing a turd' is redundant; he will be working with even inferior players with us.

All relative though, Ireland had some very poor performances and results against weaker countries too. It's all well and good deciding to selectively erase his time in charge of Ireland but it is his most recent post and should be debated. He was very poor in charge of Sunderland too and any success was over a decade ago but fingers crossed it works out here.

Keane got Sunderland promoted.

Martin saved them from relegation.  What more was he supposed to do for a club that doesn't seem like it was particularly well run.

Ireland.  Martin has done as well with Ireland as any recent England manager has done with the resources at his disposal.  (And yes, I'll include the hype machine around Southgate's waistcoat England.)

Aren't Ireland really more into their Rugby?  Is it really the footballing nation England is?  (Give the latter is the home of world football, England have done poorly for decades.  And the latest bunch of 'non-guile' cart horses were schooled by the continent...yet again.)

So, in that context, I felt Martin was walking on water with his achievements with Ireland.

So, we have an assistant (if Keane is confirmed...) who knows how to get promoted. A manager who knows how to get promoted.

....and one of them knows how to survive in the Premier.

No guarantees.

But his achievements relative to the sun, are outstanding. ...and he's had far more success than any other manager Forest were linked with.

His resume is outstanding. Promotions, cups galore, a UEFA cup final and keeping teams in the Premier and keeping Villa in the top 6 relative to the 'Big fish' was astonishing. Sure, it was a while ago re: club football. But that's why he got called up for International duty.
