I’m not sure how much to judge karanka on signings as we just don’t know how much influence he has. I can’t belive he went to Marinakis and said please sign Dias carvalho and goncalves. I would imagine he influenced pants gueddy Etc the more local ones. I guess the new manager will probably have even less influence.
Just in malta’s point, I think he improved cash. He only played darikwa due to byram injury. Robinson has done well, figs was signed before karanka and I think everyone thought he looked great last season so harsh to criticise that. Colback is basically our player and has done well, Jacob has looked good although I agree it was weird he didn’t play for so long. Lolley has done well so has Grabban.
IMO his biggest mistakes were Watson playing at all, pantilimon and relying on Osborn as a left back and not getting another in. I think we’ve consistently played worse without Robinson, pantilimon is at fault for so many we concede whether by diving over the ball (Leeds, Norwich) or coming for the wrong balls (Millwall at home for example). I do wonder had we stuck with smith and got a spare LB whether we’d hve another 6 points maybe which would be enough to keep everyone happy. It’s all so marginal. Had we lost to Leeds we’d be 12th and everyone would probably think it was ok for karanka to leave.
I think karanka wasn’t far off making us good and it’s a waste to have put him under so much pressure to achieve so quickly. I can also understand the quality of the football was poor at times and we rarely dominated games or won convincingly. I would’ve liked to have seen what happens if you just stick with someone. Maybe we’ll get lucky with the new manager anyway
