I’m leaning towards a new stadium. The city ground is great and full of character but is showing its age despite the cosmetic spruce up. We have 10-15k who can’t get a seat and don’t currently make any money from the ground on non match days- or not nearly enough. The Take That concerts apparently only netted us just into a 6 figure profit - not to be sniffed at but hardly games changing. Doing what we want to do at the city ground will be more expensive than a new stadium.
Toton gives the opportunity to build a stadium fit for national events - being quite central and straight off the M1, that could be used for games that aren’t quite big enough for Wembley. Some women’s internationals, u21 England games - even some England games - its proximity to St George’s park also would be attractive the the England set up in general.
A purpose built stadium gives opportunities for other sports such as boxing and concerts. Traffic infrastructure would be needed but could be great if invested in. If the site is big enough to include an integrated training complex for multi sports as well as our first team and academy then the possibility of revenues increase further. Add in university links and that is another income.
Hotels could be integrated and development of mixed residential and business units around the stadium (like Wembley sprawl) could also be a money spinner.
As regards to the academy it opens up millions into the catchment area.
If done properly it could be an outstanding - game changing opportunity.
Do I want to leave the city ground - no. But the business case in my opinion is a no brainer.
