Speaking of players who typify Forest from a given era (as Cohen did from the last decade...) I do like the new Psycho photo as the new header for CoYRs. Firm but fair tackles. A refreshing honesty about his play. He wasn't the 'best' talent at Forest at the time either...but a giant compared to what we currently have. But it was his 'talent' in another area....'Leadership' that Clough sought. His honest endeavour. Those robust tackles. And those free kicks. A will to win. There are qualities other than talent (which means nothing if you can't impose it on a football match.)
Passion. Effort. Work rate. Professionalism. A will to win. Those qualities I see in our Academy. 'Bringing through 'decent people' as well as 'talented' footballers.
I think that's what it really comes down to. Here today, gone tomorrow players or mercenaries (of which we've had far too many of them in the last ten years or so ergo the dearth of 'Players of the Decade' on that list... Or old school loyalty of a by-gone age. In many respects, I miss Brian Clough and the 'honesty' with which he spoke and the eloquence of the players of that legendary era. Even Kenny Burns seems quite civilised compared to the modern era player. It seems so alien to the 'self serving greed' and corrupt cheating of the modern game. Theatrical simulations et al. Win at all costs. Handball a ball into the net and try to explain it away rather than just saying, 'Yeah. I cheated.'
Cohen typified a loyalty and decency beyond his era. That's there is more to be a footballer than 'talent.' And this is something, Clough and his recruitment sought in their players. Decent character. Forest haven't had enough 'character' in the last ten years, at all...on the field and off the field...
Players staying at a club for ten years are rarer than Dragon's teeth. (Think Wes lasted 5 years? Osborn 5 years at Forest? The latter player played under every single manager for 5 years(?) barely missing a game?)
