Author of a successful start to the season with Nottingham Forest in the Championship, the French coach was asked by Watford, 20th in the Premier League, in recent hours. The ex-middle has pushed back.
Nottingham Forest's successful Championship - fourth with one game less - does not go unnoticed. Arrived last summer on the bench of the club double European champion, Sabri Lamouchi (48 years) is, in recent hours, a coach sought.
After sacking Quique Flores this weekend, the leaders of Watford, currently 20th in the Premier League, contacted the former midfield to offer him the job. In the spirit of the Watford board, Lamouchi, beyond his experience at the top level, has demonstrated at this beginning of the season, his ability to achieve consistent results despite a relatively modest workforce.
Proof of the interest of the Hornets, after trying to convince Lamouchi in vain for the first time, leaders returned to the charge earlier this week. In vain. Launched in an operation mounted with Forest, Lamouchi, very popular with local fans, is not seen leaving the club in these conditions. He told the decision makers in Watford.

Surely they can't just approach Lamouchi behind our backs.
So if they spoke to Lamouchi and Lamouchi knocked them back as the article above suggests then who gave them the permission to speak to him?

I know I have been banging on about this for weeks and I apologise if I'm getting boring but if we have learnt one thing today then it's the fact that we need to be offerring a new contract to Sabri ASAP and anybody who says that it can wait and there is no need to rush etc will be banned :D (not really).

I know I said just yesterday wait until the end of the season but I admit to back tracking a bit already. Watford is a simple one to turn down, wont be a huge deal, hire and fire owner, probably going down anyway.
Should Nuno leave Wolves for example or another tempting offer, thats very different. Having said that even if Lamouchi signs a new contract here it wouldnt stop him going if the prem comes calling. Its only the level of compensation given that differs.

I don't agree with that SM. If Sabri signs a new deal it's a detterent. When clubs see that he only has a few months left on his present deal it invites them on.

I agree sm. if a prem club like wolves come knocking then we wave goodbye no matter the length of contract. However, it would be good for all concerned that Sabri is rewarded for his good start with a lengthier deal.
Interesting I heard that at one stage we were paying 5 managers simultaneously under Fawaz!!!

This was my opinion before but now having thought about it any barrier to make a club less likely to make a move is good. So even if having a 3 year deal and better compo ultimately doesn’t stop a Wolves it might at least make them less keen and might go elsewhere.
Also worst case scenario if he does leave, we want some money for him!

Would be good to get the answer to this, as mentioned Watford is an easy rejection but Wolves is definitely not or Everton or West Ham.

Thing is, if Mouch is contract for 3 years, and the prospect of compensation a reality, Wolves or other Prem clubs might not have taken note of Mouch in the first place.
I'd wager most chairmen & owners look at who's available or who about to be available before they look at those they have to pay out for. Had someone from that group caught the eye first, Mouch's name might not even be on the table.
By not having him under a long term contract, you put him to the front of the queue by default.

Interview with Monsieur Lamouchi in today's Athletic:
Sabri Lamouchi says he is only focused on working to fulfil the dreams of Nottingham Forest fans by ending the club’s Premier League exile — and not on earning himself a new contract.
The Frenchman has been linked with Premier League clubs Watford and Wolves in recent days but says he is committed to seeing out the challenge he took on when he arrived at the City Ground in June.
The former midfielder signed a deal that only runs until the end of the season but says his immediate priority is to become the first manager to complete a full campaign in charge since Billy Davies achieved it during his first spell, between 2009 and 2011.
Lamouchi is the 13th permanent manager since then, with 12 men having come and gone since, including Davies for a second spell. That high turnover of staff became a particular feature of the previous regime under Fawaz Al-Hasawi.
The decision to hand Lamouchi only a short-team deal was partly inspired by the fact that Aitor Karanka and Martin O’Neill both departed while tied to longer deals.
When asked if he would welcome talks over a potential longer deal at Forest, Lamouchi says it is not at the top of his list of priorities.
“Honestly, I have a contract until the end of the season. You remember the last manager who lasted for a full season here?” Lamouchi tells The Athletic. “It was Billy Davies, nine years ago.
“I just want to focus on the contract I have now. Do not be worried about my situation. We are here building the same project. The club want to make the fans proud and happy; they want to make the fans’ dreams come true.
“Sometimes there will be mistakes. Sometimes the players will make mistakes, sometimes it will be the manager. But we will try together to find the right way.
“We are here now, but next week? Or at the end of the month? Next month? We need to work. I do not have any problem with my bosses or people at the club. It is easy to work with them.
“And it is fantastic to work at Nottingham Forest. I have had a warm welcome and plenty of support from the fans. The city, the fans, the staff, the players — we are all happy to work together.
“We are not here just to enjoy ourselves. We are here to do our jobs. We have a target.
“My target is to reach the end of my one-year contract and my goal, during that time, will be on a week-to-week, month-to-month basis. You know I have been that way since the beginning. Why would I change now?”
Lamouchi denies he has had any contact with Watford, who are on the hunt for their third manager of the season after parting company with Quique Sanchez Flores.
“No way. I am just focused on the project at Nottingham Forest. I am the manager here and I am happy here, with my players, with my staff and with the people at the club,” he says. “I am just focused on Millwall, Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday (Forest’s next three opponents). Game-by-game, week-by-week — that is it. It is flattering for me and it is the same for the club.
“I have been here for just five months. This is a very positive situation, a reflection on the job we have done, but we want to keep the same rhythm because we have a job to do and that job is not finished.”
The former Rennes and Ivory Coast manager has seen his stock quickly rise after leading Forest to fourth in the Championship table during his first five months in charge. The club are ready to back their head coach again in the transfer market in January, with Newcastle’s in-demand forward Dwight Gayle at the top of their list of targets as they look to add another striker and an attacking midfielder as a priority.
And Lamouchi says he is planning for the long-term at the City Ground, even if he jokingly points out that Karanka left the club after an FA Cup tie at Chelsea, where Forest head again in the same competition next month.
“Sometimes it is good for a manager to work for the long-term future. But I am working the same. I am working for the next 10 years; I am planning for that,” adds Lamouchi. “But if I had a contract for 10 years, are you sure I would still be manager in 10 years? I am sure I would not.
“I do not need the security. I am not here to be just one more manager. I want to try to do my best. I want to try with the people around me at the club to achieve our goals.
“Nine years ago, the last manager had one full year… and some friends told me to be careful because the last time Forest played at Chelsea, the manager got the sack. I am joking, of course.
“It is not so important (having a long contract). I am not relaxed about it. That is not right — I am very focused and very determined about my job.”
