A Hit Or A Flop
The kind of stick I expected.
As I said - I was in a ( very small ) minority.

No problem TPL we are allowed to disagree. I mean I still think we should have given Jason cummings more of a chance but I suspect I am in an even smaller minority with that one  :)

Not looking for ‘help’ thank you.

If I recall correctly Gareth came in when we were on the slide and definitely lacked any presence and strength up front. He did his job mainly but the whole side wasn't good enough. Not a world beater but a decent player who scored from time to time.

He scored 19 in 90 games.

Very surprised it was that "good" a strike rate.

What about Bryn Gunn? He came on in a European Cup Final as a youngster. Played 131 games for us (curiously exactly same for Peterborough afterwards!

I always felt he was a young squad player who filled in beyond his actual level due to Cloughie making crap players into average ones when needed.

Seems harsh as he cost nowt and was involved in so many games, but flop for me. Never really established himself as a 1st choice here.

I am going to have to disagree here Zico. I cant call a European Cup winner a flop, I just can't. Also Bryn Gunn covered a number of positions, right back, left back, centre back, a very valuable squad player at the time. Also he was playing against top class opposition at the time, we are talking the best of the best.

Whether he was that good or not one thing is indisputable. Brynn has more European cup winners medals than Shearer, Lineker, Ibrahimovic, Viera and Buffon combined.

Totally fair riposte. Before confirming my post, I spent ages agonising which way to go. His stats, medal and versatility certainly point one way. But I always felt he never nailed down a position. Back then, utility players played a part as only one sub, but were often too crap to get in the team (Alan Harper was crap, but was number 12 for the best Everton side in my lifetime, winning medals). Perhaps I was harsh-you make a good point about opposition he played against for instance-but I always felt less confident when he was in starting line up. I would be intrigued to know how many of his appearances came from the bench. He made 11 league appearances in 1975/76 according to Wikipedia- so he was only 17/18  amazing.  Still a bit torn though. He made the same number of appearances roughly in 10 years as Kingsley Black did in 4.
