Will be a tough game. Man Utd should’ve been 4 up at HT. They were through on goal multiple times within 2 passes. Something we are very good at. Hopefully another win to boost home form.

West ham are the visitors to the city ground next so time to have a look at what we can expect based so far.

Well the first thing that I have noticed is that west ham are now starting to put out a consistent first eleven. Could this mean that the players are now beginning to understand what is expected of them in the Lopetegui era. A change of system, style and identity at the start of the season really seemed to throw the players as they didn’t adapt to the new managers more offensive and intense way of playing with and without the ball.

West ham's opening formation is normally 1-4-1-4-1 formation although in the last match it did move to the more commonly used 1-4-2-3-1. Slowly but surely we are seeing West ham move to a very attacking team built on the defence.

Their defensive line looks to establish a quick link with the two midfield pivots, as he wants his team to control possession in a short passing game, and favours technically gifted players in midfield over work horses. The aim is to create an overload in central areas which will contribute to their attacks and also provided the defensive cover required for their full-backs and wide players.

A consistent feature of West hams team is the employment of a target man to draw a central defender out of position and create an imbalance in opposing defences. Antonio’s working with his back to goal before combining with those around him, rather than running in behind. He is also the leader and trigger to apply an intense counter-press.

When in possession they seek to slowly circulate the ball to create spaces in central areas. Their defensive midfielder, adopts a position between their central defenders to encourage progressing possession, often doing so in relation to the press their opponent is applying and in an attempt to create a three-on-two at the start of those attempts to advance in midfield with the double pivot.

It is worth noting that they change the identity of their deepest positioned midfielder, particularly when building in the attacking half, without sacrificing attacking movements or their wide forwards' attempts to drift infield. West ham’s midfield has struggled with understanding when it is actually their time to go into the space between the centre backs.

Once they have control centrally West ham then like to play wide and create overloads using full backs and wide players.

Without the ball they play with a high and compact defensive block, the intense press is mostly applied towards wider territory in an attempt to force the ball outwards as they press, via a full-back, a midfielder and the closest defensive midfielder aggressively pressing the ball once their attackers had forced it into wider territory.

If I was to look at the weakness of the west ham team I would say they struggle against fast counter attacks and through balls the most as the central midfield have yet to grasp the full understanding on the midfield rotation which proves the cover for the advancing full backs.

Interesting analysis there Mcforest. I think both teams are direct in attack and they have some excellent players. They were pretty toothless last year at the CG and like Fulham I expect them to be different.

I'm confident we will be competitive though and have every chance of picking up points. I'm not sure how we should approach this game although I'd be surprised if we disrupt the momentum built in recent games.
