442

So first game and we see a return to everyone’s favourite formation 442. Not sure whether we’ll necessarily see it again but it’s an interesting debate.

I think it can work personally but you need to right players to make it work. I actually think with colback we actually do have the central midfield for it. Not sure whether you use yacob or attempt to slot carvalho in.

The key will be how he gets carvalho into the team. If playing 442 I would go like this:

Pants
Darikwa Figs Bena Robinson
Goncalves colback yacob lolley
Carvalho
Grabban

2 things were happening during our good spell earlier in the season
1- Dawson and a Figs were solid
2- Carv, Grabban and Lolley were on same wavelength

MON simply has to get these things right ASAP before it’s season over
Get two defenders in and get confidence into Carv, Grabban and Lolley

Does not work, Murphy and Grabban looked like they had only just met. There is a reason most teams don’t use it. Just doesn’t suit the players we have IMO.

Is dead. Long live 4-2-3-1.

Based on TLS football stats, it looks like around 10 teams played 4411, 442 or 4141. So plenty of teams use it, I’d like to see it played with carv behind Grabban, someone better than cash on the wing and a proper defence before writing it off.

Spot on.

More than anything we need leadership too if Dawson out long term.

I’ll go into more detail on the match day thread when I have the energy but how any sane person could think Yacob and Colback playing 40 yards behind Murphy and Grabban would work raises questions about their own judgment.

It was akin to watching a McLaren team with Boateng and Greening. The “football” was pretty much the same standard too.

If we are going to play 442 we need 2 quick wingers, a box to box midfielder and a much better forward than Murphy who I really dont ever want to see starting a match again. Basically doesnt suit our squad at all.

Grabban was playing deeper than Murphy and colback regularly pushed further forward. If you switch Murphy and carvalho he can be the link. Lolley can definitely play in a 442, maybe goncalves would be good.

I’m not saying it will work but I think it can work. It clearly works for plenty of other clubs in the league including today’s opponents
