I can't knock Bob Rosario. I remember when he scored the winner against Tottenham at home. I flew in from America for the game (yes I know, I was mad) and he made the trip and expense worth every penny.

Nigel had a better football brain and had less physical attributes than Stan.  Despite that, Nigel defied time and space to be as good as he was for the Silver Generation.

For a variety of reasons, I'd have Nigel ahead of Stan.  More than anything, Nigel summed up the 'Forest way.'

That said, if Clough had signed Collymore during that relegation season, we'd have had them both playing in the same team.  And that would have been something to behold.

I remember the 'end game' season very well.  Forest did everything 'but score.'  They needed something different.  Stan would have given them that.  Something more 'physical.'

To be fair our centre half situation played a big part. Walker gone, natural replacement Wassall jumped ship. Tiler not really up to it. Keane and Clough at CB at some points in season. Pearce, Wilson and Chett spent long periods injured. Mind you a front 2 at QPR in April of Bannister and Rosario and we lost 4-3. Started season with Clough and Sheringham up front! So yeah Stan would have made a big difference.

You're nailed on re: the CH situation.  Losing Walker and Sheringham were disastrous.   The wrong time for them to go or for eg. Pearce to get injured.  Even the reliable Chettle injured.

We're missing one striker from this equation.  Sheringham.  I recall Sheringham scoring the goal to sink L*verpool.  How to do you go from doing that at the start of the season, then losing both him and Walker and then getting relegated.  All in the same season?

Walker and Sheringham summed up Forest's decline.  Can't defend.  Can't score.

It did for them.  And Clough.

The team that started that season against Scousers was a top 10 or higher team. Sales, injuries and a declining manager mea t the fine margins  early always went the other way.

None of us would support PVHs striking but it was his protest at the destruction of the promotion side. I've always thought that the behaviour of the Club was every bit as bad as the strikers. Not Bassett's fault I think but the episode must go down as the darkest chapter in our history. By the way PVH was a terrific striker maybe not quite as good as SVC but not too far away. Joe Baker no.1 for me.

Although neither could be classed as our best ever strikers, I do feel special mentions should be made to David Johnson and Robert Earnshaw as well

Was Collymore's all round game better than Nigel Clough's?

Both briiliant players but two very different types of player.

For me Clough just shades it plus he did it for Forest over a much longer period than Stan.

For me Stan had everything, there was nothing he couldn’t do.

Stan was awesome but I don't think he could pick a pass like Nigel could, then again Stan could turn and run with the ball better than Nigel.

Both fantastic. It's a very close call but it's Nigel for me. Just.

I have also gone for our number 9 but it was a tough call.

Agree about PVH. We know now the club was a circus and the owners a bunch of idiots. PVH's actions were symptomatic of the charade of management that what was going on behind the scenes at the time. I too don't blame Bassett. He performed brilliantly in those circumstances.
